Description
VALERY KAPTEREV (1900–1981)
Kyrgyz
signed and titled in Cyrillic ‘V. Kapterev’ (on the reverse), inscribed, titled ‘Kirgiz’ and dated ‘29/IX/34’ on the original Vsekokhudozhnik label affixed to the reverse
gouache on paper
Painted in 1934.
Valery Kapterev studied at VKhUTEMAS under Aleksandr Shevchenko, graduating in 1925, and subsequently at the State Institute of Cinematography. He was a member of several influential Moscow artists’ associations, including Bytie and the Moscow Artists’ Society (OMKh).
He travelled extensively throughout Central Asia in the 1920s and 1930s, producing a significant body of work inspired by Kazakhstan, the Pamir Mountains and Tajikistan. Much of his pre-war work was lost or destroyed during and after the Second World War, making the surviving works from this period particularly rare. His paintings are held at the Tretyakov Gallery as well as in several museum collections in Russia and Central Asia, notably at the Savitsky Museum in Nukus.
