G. N. Gorelov studied at the Penza School of Fine Arts from 1898 to 1903, then at the Imperial Academy of Arts, where he attended Ilya Repin’s studio and was taught by Pavel Chistyakov and Franz Roubaud. It was during his years at the Academy that his interest in history painting was forged. After graduating, he undertook a study tour of Germany, France and Italy in 1911, thanks to a scholarship.
In 1914, he began teaching at the Kharkiv Art School, before joining the Moscow School of Art in Memory of 1905. On his return to Moscow in 1915, he devoted himself to monumental painting. From 1904 onwards, he exhibited his works regularly and became a member of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions (1912–1916), the Society of South Russian Artists (1906–1909), and subsequently the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1924–1926). In 1939, he was admitted to the Union of Artists of the USSR.
Gorelov worked in the genres of history painting, battle painting and portraiture. In 1953, he was elected a full member of the USSR Academy of Arts and was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1950.
