FILIPP MALYAVIN (1869–1940) Portrait of Pavel Ivanovich Kharitonenko inscribed ‘iz sobraniya Korostina’ (on the reverse) pencil on paper 37.5 × 28 cm PROVENANCE: Collection of Aleksei Fedorovich Korostin Pavel Ivanovich Kharitonenko (1852–1914) was one of the leading Russian industrialists, philanthropists and art collectors of his generation. A major patron of the arts, he was president of the Society of Friends of the Rumyantsev Museum and an honorary member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts. His famous collection included major works by artists such as Ivan Kramskoi, Vladimir Borovikovsky and Mikhail Nesterov. Aleksei Fedorovich Korostin (1903–1957) was an art historian, collector and specialist in Russian prints. A senior researcher in the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts, he published several important studies on Russian graphic art and built up a notable collection of drawings and prints.
