Painted around the 1930s
Provenance:
Collection of Igor Ditchenko (Ihor Dychenko, 1946–2015), collector, art historian and Soviet and Ukrainian painter, one of the leading theorists of the Ukrainian avant-garde, Kyiv.
Private collection, Europe.
Nikolai Tyrsa occupies a unique place in Soviet art. At a time when the official aesthetic of the 1930s glorified monumental and idealised figures, he chose instead to depict the understated poetry of everyday life.
Tyrsa studied architecture in Saint Petersburg whilst attending classes at Elizaveta Zvantseva’s art school, where he was taught by Mstislav Dobuzhinsky and Léon Bakst. Throughout his life, he regarded himself as an heir to the tradition of the World of Art (Mir Iskousstva). After the Revolution, he helped found VKhUTEMAS before devoting himself to book illustration, becoming one of the greatest illustrators of his generation whilst continuing to pursue a deeply personal artistic practice.
