Painted in 1936, this work depicts two Red Army soldiers wearing ‘Boudionovka’ helmets adorned with a star, associated with the First Cavalry Army. The title, inscribed on the reverse, refers to *Konarmiya* (Red Cavalry), Isaac Babel’s famous collection of short stories inspired by his experience in Semyon Budyonny’s cavalry during the Soviet–Polish War of 1920. Mullyar was a renowned illustrator of Babel’s literary works and frequently explored themes related to Russian and Jewish cultural history.
