St Sebastian
coloured pencil on paper

Provenance:
Collection of Igor Ditchenko (Ihor Dychenko, 1946–2015), collector, art historian and Soviet and Ukrainian painter, one of the leading theorists of the Ukrainian avant-garde, Kyiv.
Private collection, Europe.
Sergei Mikhailovich Eisenstein, the renowned Soviet filmmaker and theorist, was also a draughtsman and caricaturist. Following his major films *Battleship Potemkin* and *October*, he travelled to Hollywood in 1930 to pursue his career there, but met with no success with the studios. Thanks to the writer Upton Sinclair, he subsequently signed on to a film project in Mexico entitled *¡Que viva México!*.
Eisenstein stayed in Mexico from 1930 to 1932, during which time he produced numerous drawings and sketches inspired by the country’s culture, landscapes and people, vividly capturing its colours and energy.
