VIKTOR MARKOVICH MIDLER (1888–1979) studied at the Odessa Higher Art School under Gennady Ladyzhensky and Kyriak Kostandi between 1908 and 1913, before continuing his training in Moscow in the studios of Alexander Kuprin, Ilya Mashkov and Robert Falk. He began exhibiting in 1917 and was a member of the *Four Arts* group of artists between 1925 and 1927. Following a trip to France in 1927, he developed a varied body of work comprising the famous Samarkand cycle, Parisian landscapes, portraits, and later urban and landscape views.
