LEONID CHERNOV (1915–1990) Old Delhi signed, titled in Cyrillic and dated ‘L. Chernov 1957 / Delhi’ (bottom right); exhibition label (on the reverse) oil on canvas 50 x 60.4 cm Painted in 1957 Leonid Ivanovich Chernov was a Ukrainian Soviet painter, draughtsman and teacher. A graduate of the Kharkiv Institute of Fine Arts, he was a pupil of Mykola Samokych, Oleksii Kokel and Mykhailo Kozyk. Renowned for his landscapes, still lifes and genre scenes, he taught at the Kharkiv Institute of Fine Arts from 1947, where he was appointed professor in 1977, training several generations of Ukrainian artists. An Honoured Artist of the Ukrainian SSR, he exhibited extensively throughout the Soviet Union and abroad. A study trip to India in 1957 had a lasting influence on his work.
