Meer Akselrod was a Soviet painter, graphic artist and illustrator born in Belarus, best known for his watercolours and gouaches depicting Jewish life in the Russian Empire and the USSR. A survivor of a pogrom in his childhood, he studied at VKhUTEMAS/VKhUTEIN in Moscow, where he later taught. A member of the ‘4 Arts’ society and a contributor to theatre and film projects (notably with Sergei Eisenstein), he developed an expressive style centred on the human figure. His works are held in major collections such as the Tretyakov Gallery, the Russian Museum and the Pushkin State Museum of Fine Arts.
