VALENTIN SMIRNOV (1927–2009) Design sketch for the Water Sports Club signed, inscribed and dated in Cyrillic ‘V. Smirnov / Eskiz k panno v dom Vodnika / 1966’ (along the lower edge); sketch showing the dimensions of the decoration ‘460 × 300’ (on the reverse) oil on cardboard 35.4 × 48.3 cm Valentin Sergeevich Smirnov was a Soviet painter born in Yaroslavl. He studied at the Yaroslavl Art School (graduating in 1948), then at the Kiev Art Institute (graduating in 1955), where he was taught by S. Grigoriev, K. Trokhimenko and V. Kostecki. Working primarily in the field of easel painting, he developed a body of work representative of mid-20th-century Soviet painting. From 1957 onwards, Smirnov regularly took part in republican and all-Union exhibitions. At the buyer’s request, we would be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above.
