SOLOMON MOISEEVICH GERSHOV (1906–1989) Still Life with a Japanese figurine signed in Cyrillic ‘S. Gershov’, signed with the artist’s monogram, titled, annotated and dated in Cyrillic in pencil ‘Still Life with a Japanese figurine… / SG / late 1960s’ (top right); Igor Dichenko’s collection stamp (on the reverse) gouache on paper 50.2 x 42 cm Painted in the late 1960s Provenance: Collection of Igor Dichenko (Ihor Dychenko) (1946–2015), collector, art historian and Soviet then Ukrainian painter, one of the leading advocates and theorists of the Ukrainian avant-garde, Kyiv. Private collection, Europe. Solomon Moiseevich Gershov is one of the most distinctive figures of the Russian avant-garde. A painter and draughtsman, he was a pupil of Marc Chagall, Kazimir Malevich and Pavel Filonov, and maintained a close friendship with Robert Falk. Developing a highly personal artistic language, he produced a prolific body of work comprising still lifes, landscapes, portraits and compositions, executed in gouache, tempera, watercolour or ink on a variety of media. His works are now held in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow, the Russian Museum in St Petersburg, the Mark Rothko Art Centre in Daugavpils, as well as in numerous public and private collections around the world.
