Description
VASYL KHMELUK (1903–1986) The musician signed ‘V Khmeluk’ (bottom right) gouache on paper 46.5 × 30 cm Vasyl Khmeliuk (1903–1986) was a Ukrainian painter, graphic artist and poet associated with the School of Paris. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków and at the Ukrainian Studio of Fine Arts before settling in Paris in 1928. His first solo exhibition took place in 1931. He exhibited extensively in France, Great Britain, Italy and Switzerland, attracting the attention of major collectors and dealers, including Ambroise Vollard. From 1943 onwards, he was associated with the Galerie Durand-Ruel. Known for his vibrant colours and expressive Post-Impressionist style, his works are held in museum and private collections in Paris, London, Stockholm, Lviv and Oxford.
