Description
VLADIMIR STENBERG (1899–1982) Sketch for the monument ‘Constructivists for Peace’ signed, titled in Cyrillic and dated ‘Konstruktivisty k miru [Constructivists for Peace] / 9 10 75 / V. Stenberg’ (bottom right and along the top edge); stamp of the Igor Dichenko collection (on the reverse) coloured ink on paper 21.1 x 17 cm Executed on 9 October 1975 Provenance: Collection of Igor Dichenko (Ihor Dychenko) (1946–2015), collector, art historian and Soviet and Ukrainian painter; one of the leading figures of the Ukrainian avant-garde, Kyiv. Private collection, Europe Vladimir Stenberg was a leading figure of the Soviet avant-garde. The son of a Swedish artist who settled in Russia in 1898, he trained alongside his brother Georgii at the Stroganov School, then at the First State Free Workshops, where they were among the first graduates to be awarded, in 1920, the title of ‘first Red Artists’. From their student days onwards, the two brothers worked together, creating theatre and film sets, stage designs and proposals for monuments. After the Revolution, they played an active part in the grand celebrations of the new regime, designing temporary urban installations and proposals for monuments with a revolutionary theme. Their bold use of geometric shapes, modern typefaces and asymmetrical compositions foreshadowed the Constructivist aesthetic for which they would become renowned, before they went on to become the most famous designers of Soviet cinema posters of the 1920s.
