Description
‘ST NICHOLAS’ ICON WITH SILVER FRAME Russia, second half of the 16th century Frame – silver, coinage, engraving, gilding. Cyrillic master’s hallmark ‘A.P’, Cyrillic assayer’s hallmark ‘N.D’ above the date 1832, the coat of arms of the city of Moscow and silver hallmark 84. wood, levkas, tempera 31 × 26 cm Saint Nicholas, Archbishop of Myra (5th century), is one of the most venerated Christian saints. In Russia, the cult of Saint Nicholas held a particularly prominent place in the national pantheon. Russian depictions of Saint Nicholas have been known since the 11th century. Traditionally, Saint Nicholas is depicted in half-length, dressed in a bishop’s robe. Within the medallions, a scene from the ‘Miracle of Nicaea’ is depicted on either side of the saint – Christ and the Mother of God presenting Nicholas with the insignia of the episcopal office. It is likely that this icon belonged to this type. However, due to the destruction of the other paintings, the fragment containing the face was transferred to a new support. Style and date: The icon is executed in accordance with the aesthetic and technical conventions of antiquity. The painting techniques are far from the schematic and mechanistic style typical of the later period. The complexity, the multi-layered painting of the face, and the character of the details and colours bring the icon closer to works from the second half of the 16th century.
