Description
ICON OF ‘SAVIOUR EMMANUEL’
IN A SILVER FRAME
Moscow, late 18th – early 19th century
Hallmarks: silversmith’s mark in Cyrillic ‘V.Sh’, mark of the
master assayer (illegible) ‘181( ?)’, ‘AOP’ mark;
silver mark ‘84’, coat of arms of Moscow
wood, levkas, tempera; setting: silver, chiselling, engraving, gilding
31.5 x 26.8 cm
Condition: unrestored, in good condition
The stylised archaism and the monumentality of the image are
direct allusions to the characteristics of the art of Grozny and
Godunov. However, the power of the ancient painting is
‘ennobled’, softened by the aesthetic of iconographic classicism
of the early 19th century. A remarkable, sober and noble
image of the Saviour in his youth.
