ICON ‘MOTHER OF GOD OF FIODOROVSKAYA’ Moscow, early 19th century wood, plaster, gold leaf, tempera 31 x 26 cm Condition: in good overall condition, unrestored A fine example of traditional icon painting. The Fiodorovskaya Icon of the Mother of God is venerated by the Orthodox as a miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary. The original is kept in the city of Kostroma, in the Cathedral of the Epiphany and Anastasia (Bogoiavlenski Sobor). Legend attributes its creation to Saint Luke the Evangelist. It is also revered as one of the icons of the Romanov dynasty, linked to the election in 1613 of the dynasty’s founder, Mikhail Romanov, who spent his youth in Kostroma. At the buyer’s request, we shall be happy to provide a general report on the condition of the lot described above.
