Central Russia, late 19th century

94.5 × 57 cm
Condition: generally good condition, with some localised restoration to the ornamental gilded background and the edges of the icon
Metropolitan Peter (second half of the 13th century – 1326) was one of the most important religious and political figures in Rus’. He played a decisive role in the rise of the Principality of Moscow and in the formation of the centralised Russian state. His most significant achievement was the transfer of the metropolitan see from Vladimir to Moscow, thereby definitively establishing the latter’s pre-eminence as the spiritual centre of Rus’. Confessor to the Grand Prince, builder, theologian and iconographer, Peter was venerated as the first of the great hierarch saints of Moscow. This large-format icon, depicting one of Russia’s most venerated saints, is executed with great artistic skill and is of the utmost interest to collectors.
