Description
ICON ‘THE HOLY PRINCES OF YAROSLAVL: THEODORE, DAVID AND CONSTANTINE’ Yaroslavl, early 19th century wood (kovtcheg), levkas, tempera 29 x 24.5 cm Condition: this ancient icon, probably dating from the 17th century, was restored in the second half of the 19th century in Old Believer workshops, whose role in the study, collection and preservation of ancient heritage cannot be overestimated. Theodore of Yaroslavl, along with his sons David of Yaroslavl and Constantine of Yaroslavl, are venerated saints of medieval Russia, closely associated with the city of Yaroslavl. Theodore reigned in the 18th century, during the difficult period following the Mongol invasion of Rus’. He spent time at the court of the Golden Horde, where he became known for his humility, wisdom and unshakeable Christian faith. Despite political pressures, he governed his people with patience and kindness. His sons, David and Constantine, followed his example. They are remembered for their piety, fairness and devotion to their people. Like their father, they combined princely leadership with deep religious devotion. After their deaths, all three were canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church. Their relics, preserved in Yaroslavl, became an important place of pilgrimage, symbolising faith, endurance and virtuous leadership in times of trial.
