Description
[Expedition of Quiberon] - FRENCH school of the beginning of the XIXth century. "Antoine du BOISBAUDRY died in the army aged 21 on 16 July 1794". A souvenir watercolour of the Chevalier du Boisbaudry depicting a woman weeping over a tomb wrapped in the branches of a willow tree. In the background are a fort and an artillery battery. This must be Fort Penthièvre. On the back, handwritten notes: "after my death I want this frame to be / offered on my behalf to my brother Angel the / Viscount du Boisbaudry / on 12 July 1831" and "on 23 February 1839 I give / this frame to my nephew Hypolite de / Boisbaudry cadet (...) the date of the / death of his uncle Antoine chevalier de / Boisbaudry (...) in Quiberon on the field / of honour on 16 July 1794". Height: 21.5 cm. Length: 22.5 cm. Antoine-François, chevalier du Boisbaudry, born on 21 July 1769, was made lieutenant of artillery on 1 September 1785 and appointed captain in the same army on 22 August 1791. He took part in the Quiberon expedition and took part in the Battle of Plouharnel on 16 July 1795 as a captain in the Dresnay regiment. Despite engaging some 4,000 combatants, the blue general Louis Lemoine repulsed them with his 18,000 soldiers. The Chevalier du Boisbaudry died gloriously. Provenance: - Our work probably belonged to one of the Chevalier's brothers, who gave it to his brother Ange (born in 1767, Artillery Colonel in Rennes and Chevalier de Saint-Louis). The latter gave it to his nephew Hyppolyte, born in 1821. - By uninterrupted family descent, Château de la Ville Der.
