Description
François PILS (Steinakirchen am Forst (Austria), 1785 - Paris, 1867) General Oudinot receives his appointment as Marshal when he is wounded lying on a haystack on 1 July 1809. Ink. Height: 17 cm. Width: 24.6 cm (Hole). General Oudinot was wounded in the ear at the Battle of Wagram on 6 July 1809. His surgeon Capiomont dressed him on the battlefield. Some time later a bullet pierced his thigh. Still suffering from his wounds, the General lay on straw in a barn in a small village close to headquarters. "But no sooner had he dozed off than Colonel Flahaut, aide-de-camp to the Prince of Neuchâtel, asked to come in. The General, who heard me negotiating to protect his rest, recognised the colonel's voice and shouted: 'Come in, Flahaut! The latter, obeying him, said at once: "Mr Marshal, I bring you a letter of service from his Majesty and I am happy to have been chosen to fulfil this mission, which allows me to be the first to offer you my congratulations," and not giving him time to open the dispatch, he threw himself into his arms." (Marching diary of Grenadier Pils, collected and annotated by M. Raoul de Cisternes).
