Description
François PILS (Steinakirchen am Forst (Austria), 1785 - Paris, 1867) Marshal Oudinot determining the location of the troops for the battle of Oboïarszina on 31 July 1812. Grease pencil and ink. Original drawing reproduced in the Journal de marche du Grenadier Pils, collected and annotated by M. Raoul de Cisternes. On the back, a cavalry regiment in marching order. Pencil sketch. Height: 19 cm. Width: 12.2 cm. Marshal Oudinot is preparing his troops to face General Wittgenstein's army. As soon as the Russian army made its first moves in the middle of the night, the Marshal got up to give the last instructions to his council, always followed by his faithful grenadier who, in the haste of the night and for want of a lantern, "had taken the mount of a Portuguese light-horse dressed in the brightest colours", which earned him much ridicule later on (from the Journal de marche du Grenadier Pils, collected and annotated by M. Raoul de Cisternes).
