Description
François PILS (Steinakirchen am Forst (Austria), 1785 - Paris, 1867) Marshal Oudinot wounded before crossing the Berezina on 28 November 1812. Watercolour enhanced with pastel. Dated lower left. Height: 18.5 cm. Width: 14.7 cm. Shortly before crossing the Berezina, on 28 November 1812, Marshal Oudinot was wounded again. He would receive no fewer than 34 wounds during his campaigns. As the Cossack troops attacked the outposts to the point of capturing a battery of protective artillery, "the Duke of Reggio, indignant at such audacity, remained in the middle of the road without bothering about the bullets whistling from all sides; [...] he was impatient while waiting for his order to be carried out and said to me: 'Do you have a little brandy to give me to warm me up? "I looked for my flask in my saddlebag, no longer seeing what was going on, and when I found a small amount of brandy and presented it, I saw at the same time M. le Maréchal putting his hand to his side and falling from his horse, which immediately escaped. [A young acrobat came to my aid, freed me and helped me lift the Marshal. We put him on his feet. (from the Marching Diary of Grenadier Pils, collected and annotated by M. Raoul de Cisternes).
