Description
Baptismal BONBON BOX for the Duke of Bordeaux in 1821 Round-shaped, the lid is embroidered with cannetille and gold sequins with the number "H" inscribed in a crown of lilies on a white moire background. The mounting is presumed to be made of gilded embossed paper decorated with foliate friezes and a string of pearls. It is accompanied by a paper bearing the handwritten note in ink: "This box of sweets was in my plate at the christening party of the Duke of Bordeaux when I accompanied Mde la Dusse Dangoulême in 1821". France, Restoration period. Diameter: 16 cm. Presumed height: 3.5 cm. The set is presented in a giltwood frame with a midnight blue velvet background from the 19th century, never opened. Provenance : - Probably Baroness Alexandre de Courson. - By uninterrupted descent, Baron M. de B., Manoir du Vally, Guingamp. This memento, kept in the family from the beginning, is an exceptional testimony to the pomp and circumstance surrounding the christening of the "miracle child" on 1 May 1821. It adorned the plate of a member of the Duchess d'Angoulême's retinue, probably at the official banquet held at the Tuileries Palace after the religious ceremony. According to our research, no similar box is held in public collections.
