Description
Mathurin MOREAU (Dijon, 1822 - Paris, 1912)
Daphnis and Chloe.
Carrara marble signed on the terrace.
Second half of the 19th century.
Height : 81 cm. Width: 41 cm (A finger is missing, rare small chips and accidents).
In view of the grace and gentleness of this work, it seems that Mathurin Moreau, in offering this veritable allegory of Romanticism to our gaze, made his own the phrase of Longus "The eyes are the paths by which love descends into the soul" (Daphnis and Chloe, Book III, 2nd or 3rd century AD).
A version of this work is in the Musée d'Orsay (Inv. ChM 113).
