Description
Pierre DUPUIS (Orléans, 1833 - Bréhat, 1915) Naiad with turtle Oil on canvas signed and dated 1904 top right. Height: 54 cm. Width: 73 cm (Damage and missing parts, restoration). Provenance : - Pierre Dupuis studio collection - By descent, Breton collection. A pupil of Léon Cogniet and Horace Vernet, Pierre Dupuis won the Second Prix de Rome in 1863 with "Joseph se fait reconnaître par ses frères". Although he did not abandon academicism, from the 1880s onwards he dipped his brushes into naturalism, for which the island of Bréhat provided him with the subjects. Scenes of rural life were then exhibited under the gold of the Salon. The most famous of these is undoubtedly "Les Moissonneuses" (The Harvesters), painted in 1893 and now in the Musée des Beaux-arts in Quimper. Bréhat captivated his soul and nourished his work for thirty years. It was here that he breathed his last.
