Description
Raymond SUBES (Paris, 1891 - Etampes, 1970) for LA SAMARITAINE Exceptional suite of wrought iron GUARDS, approximately 22m linear, circa 1926-1928. It comprises 18 elements from the extension to La Samaritaine designed by Henri Sauvage between 1926 and 1928. They are fitted with hammered oblong vertical motifs decorated with scrolls held in the centre of the frame by brass parts. Heights: between 100 and 105 cm. Lengths: between 192 and 70 cm (Damage and missing parts, superficial rust spots, some sandblasted). Provenance : - La Samaritaine, extension Sauvage. - Removed during restoration work on the building between 2015 and 2020. - 2021: donation by the Board of Directors of La Samaritaine to the association "La Maison du Forgeron" (Saint-Thélo, Côtes-d'Armor). - 2025: the Saint-Brieuc Economic Activities Court declared the association in receivership and ordered the sale of its assets by auction. Henri Sauvage's "New Samaritaine "In 1926, the "old Samaritaine" underwent a revival thanks to the collaboration between Jourdain and Henri Sauvage. This project saw the abandonment of curved façades and cupolas in favour of more vertical lines. The old buildings, picturesque but unhealthy, were replaced by modern French architecture, combining aesthetics and hygiene" (Cité de l'Architecture et du Patrimoine). Raymond Subes designed the signs, including the famous octagonal medallion, as well as the interior balustrades. The balustrades are the last remaining evidence of the design of this building, which has become an icon of Art Deco. Sales charge: 14.28 inc.
