Description
A bronze balsamaire, the body depicting wrestlers and runners, as well as laurel wreaths and anthropomorphic pillars, displaying the attributes of Mercury and Hercules. Height: 10 cm, Diameter: 9 cm (Pierced base).
Based on the model kept at the BNF from the collection of the Count of Caylus, found in Sisteron (04), 2nd century AD.
P.I.: Balsamaries are small vases generally used to hold oil or ointments, which were much used in the gymnasium. The iconography of the vase is therefore linked to its function, sport.
