Description
Charles-André HARPIN (1766–?), Nancy-Lorraine. A very rare etching depicting the château, greenhouses, orangeries and flowerbeds at Lorry-lès-Metz (Moselle). In the foreground, a whole army of gardeners are hard at work carrying potted shrubs, ready for replanting, etc. A banner at the top reads ‘Supplement to the Gardeners’ Dictionary’. 20.8 x 15 cm. Mounted on card and set in a passe-partout.
Harpin’s engravings are extremely rare. His body of work is, moreover, extremely limited. The two key articles on him were published in 1862 by Beaupré in the *Mémoires de la Société d’Archéologie Lorraine*, and by Paul Chenut in *Le Pays Lorrain* in 1937.
