Description
SOLDIERS’ LETTERS: A collection of 20 letters dating from 1744 to 1848. Strasbourg, phonetic spelling by a soldier in the Montmarin Regiment, 1744. Larche (near Barcelonnette), from a corporal in the auxiliary sappers, Year 2. Perpignan, Year 3, from a medical officer (3 pages; discreet postmark: ‘Arm des Pyr Orle’). From Forlì, Year 5, from a dragoon of the 15th Regiment. From Alba in 1799 (sic), from a chasseur in the 18th demi-brigade of the Army of Italy. Paris, from a private in the 39th demi-brigade, Year 10 (two letters). From Vicenza, Year 14, 3 and a third pages from a sergeant major in the 7th Company of Cuirassiers (good descriptive text, postmark no. 12 / Arm d’Italie). From Osterode (Ostrada, Poland, south of Eylau) 6 March 1807 from a sergeant-major at the headquarters of the Grande Armée, addressed to Paris (with the irregular red postmark ‘Bau Gal / Grande Armée’); he describes the Battle of Eylau and details what followed, including the troops’ quarters... An interesting 3-page text (with a transcription provided). From Burgos (Spain), from a soldier of the 47th Regiment, 1808. Salamanca, 1809, from Guillaume Rispaud d’Aiguebelle (1762–1825), captain in the 7th Regiment (two and a half pages to his brother, red postmark barely legible). Bois Le Duc (Netherlands), from a carabiniere of the 3rd Light Infantry Regiment, 1810. Bayonne, February 1810, en route to Spain under the command of Colonel Baron Mouton Duvernet. Gironne, May 1810, to the 4th Battalion of the Artillery Train: ‘We suffered… provisions were running low…’ (a good account of the day of 20 February, poor-quality postmark from the main post office / Spanish arm). From Poitiers, 9th Cuirassier Regiment, 1829. Versailles, 1st Regiment of Cuirassiers of the Royal Guard. Muret / Toulouse, from a soldier in the artillery train, 1825. From Neuf-Brisach, 36th Line Regiment, 1831. From Digne, 41st Line Regiment, 1845. From Nîmes, from a sapper in the 2nd Engineers’ Regiment, 1848.
