Description
ALESSANDRO LA VOLPE Lucera, 1820 – Rome, 1887 Marechiaro, Posillipo Signed ‘A La Volpe’ in the lower left-hand corner Oil on canvas, 35 × 67.3 cm Provenance: Venice, Curtis Collection A refined landscape painter of the nineteenth-century Neapolitan school, he trained at the Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of Gabriele Smargiassi, one of the leading exponents of Romantic landscape painting. From the very beginning, he devoted himself almost exclusively to depicting nature, coastal views and the Gulf of Naples, developing a style characterised by a keen attention to atmospheric and lighting effects. He was among the artists who helped to revitalise Neapolitan landscape painting, gradually moving away from purely topographical depictions towards a more poetic representation of the landscape. He exhibited regularly at the exhibitions organised by the Società Promotrice di Belle Arti di Napoli and took part in major national exhibitions, winning the favour of critics and collectors in Italy and abroad. His works were acquired by the Bourbon royal family.
