CARLO GRUBACS Venice 1802 – 1878 Venice, St Mark’s Basilica View of St Mark’s Square with the Clock Tower Oil on canvas, 20.5 × 27 cm (2) Provenance: Venice, Curtis Collection These two elegant paintings, from the Curtis Collection in Venice, date from the first half of the 1850s. Their dating is confirmed by the depiction of the new façade of the Patriarch’s Palace, the renovation of which began in 1837 and was completed in 1850. Whilst maintaining a strong link with the tradition of the great 18th-century Venetian landscape painters, Carlo Grubacs developed a personal style, moving beyond a mere reproduction of earlier models. In his cityscapes, the precision of perspective and attention to architectural detail – derived from the teachings of Canaletto – blend with a more romantic sensibility, characterised by delicate light and a dreamlike atmosphere. The Venetian monuments, depicted with great accuracy, are enveloped in a poetic atmosphere created by the play of light in the sky, where light clouds help to create a harmonious and evocative vision of the city. The reflections of the architecture and the presence of small, animated figures help to create an elegant and evocative Venice, suspended between reality and memory. During his career, he enjoyed considerable success with an international audience, particularly amongst European collectors seeking mementos of the city.
