Description
GIUSEPPE CALETTI (attributed to) (Ferrara, c. 1600 – c. 1660) Romantic scene Oil on canvas, 50.5 × 70 cm Giuseppe Caletti was one of the most eccentric figures in Ferrara’s Baroque art scene; sources were slow to recount his dissolute life – spent more in taverns than in painting academies – and to pass on his presumptuous boasts that he had attended no school whatsoever, yet felt equally capable of surpassing the finest artists, including the famous Titian. The painter’s style shows close similarities with the works of Catanio, though expressed in a rebellious manner—one might say spontaneous and free from any sort of preconceived framework. Equally evident are the influences of Dosso Dossi and Guercino, whom he seems to imitate yet simultaneously subvert, expressing an anti-classical sentiment akin to certain works by Pietro Muttoni, whilst also reflecting a distinct cultural tradition.
