Description
GIACINTO CALANDRUCCI (attributed to)
(Palermo, 1646 – 1707)
The Immaculate Conception
Oil on canvas, 92 × 67 cm
Calandrucci learnt the basics in Palermo, but it is fair to say that his training took place in Rome, where he is documented at the end of the 1670s. In the Eternal City, as Lione Pascoli informs us, the painter learnt the principles of drawing from Pietro Del Po before joining Maratti’s workshop, where ‘he saw various works of his, for he was never enamoured of his style’ and ‘this secured him many, and many commissions, both small and large’. A prime example of this is the canvas under consideration, in which we perceive a Baroque sensibility tempered by the delicate classicism of the figure, where Roman culture blends with Mediterranean influences.
