[VENICE] HOEYE, Rombout van den (1622–1671). Venetia. Amsterdam, mid-17th century.
A rare bird’s-eye view of the city of Venice, derived from the original engraving by Matthaus Merian (1593–1650) and accompanied by a poetic text in Latin, Dutch and French by Arnoldus Montanus (1625?–1683), a Dutch Reformed minister, historian and geographer, author of numerous works on travel and descriptions of countries around the world.
Etching (42 × 52 cm), depicting a bird’s-eye view of Venice and an engraved text, with the signatures of the engraver and the author at the bottom (browning and minor repairs). Set in a modern frame.
