FIVE COMMESSI MARBLE PLAQUES, OPIFICIO DELLE PIETRE DURE, FLORENCE, 17th–18th CENTURY three depicting birds and insects, one with a rural landscape and the other with flowers, all set in gilded wooden frames of a later period; defects, some chips and losses, a few scratches and stains; the frames are of a later period The largest, 7.2 x 12 cm (frame, 15 x 20.5 cm) The others, 7.5 x 11 cm (frame, 15 x 19 cm) A LOT OF FIVE COMPOSED MARBLE PANELS, FLORENCE, 17TH–18TH CENTURY; DEFECTS, SOME CHIPS AND MISSING PARTS, FEW SCRATCHES AND STAINS, FRAMES FROM A LATER PERIOD (5) Originally intended almost certainly to adorn the drawers of a coin cabinet, these compositions—characterised by bright colours contrasting with the black background—are traditionally attributed to marble carvers active in Medici Florence during the 17th and 18th centuries. Among the most apt and refined comparisons attributed to the Grand Ducal workshop, one should note the ebony example with rich naturalistic ornamentation framed in a similar manner to ours (A. M. Giusti, La fabbrica delle meraviglie, Florence 2015, p. 29, no. 29) and two others decorated with plaques featuring clusters of grapes with birds and insects, now preserved in Palazzo Vecchio and Burghley House (A.
