Part of a series of two sculptures linked to Basque cosmogony, it is most often compared with "Ilargiamandreak Mamuak" (Masks of Grandmother Moon), a set of seven works symbolising the various aspects of the Moon and created in 1977.
The Gudari (Soldier) naturally takes on paramount importance in Basque cosmogony and its contemporary history, thus evoking a certain parallel with the Basque resistance against the Franco dictatorship. The Moon, a central element of Basque heritage and culture, is here under the protection of these Basque soldiers, who ensure it continues to shine.
