Through the creation of the Ezpalak series, Mendiburu explores the notion of scale in sculpture. In his view, size is merely secondary to the sculpture’s occupation of space and time. Through the interplay of reflections and twists that he incorporates into these mobile sculptures, which appear static, the size varies and evolves within a space defined by the passing of time. The archive photographs, which all show these sculptures photographed outdoors, aim to reveal a variation in images that appear depending on the Earth’s rotation relative to the sun. The result is a multitude of different views, yet all seemingly similar.
