Ideologically close to Constantin Brâncuși, Mendiburu draws inspiration from The Wisdom of the Earth (1907) from both a formal and intellectual perspective. This formalism is evident in the absence of a plinth in his work, as well as in the use of ‘non-noble’ materials such as concrete or stone. Furthermore, Mendiburu declares his love for wood, trees and the forest into which he immerses himself. This rare series of works combining concrete and wood are all representations of this Basque force, tamed by Man over time and a symbol of the rusticity so dear to the artist.
