Description
Louise Jeanne Aimée Hervieu (Paris, 1878 – Paris, 1954) “Un bijou” Charcoal on paper mounted on a thick sheet. Drawing dimensions: 153 x 158 mm. A delicate and refined drawing by the French artist Louise Hervieu, focusing on the ornamental study of a piece of jewellery in the Art Nouveau style, featuring exuberant plant motifs. The composition depicts an elaborate piece of goldsmithing rendered with meticulous and vibrant lines, in which the artist combines velvety shadow effects with extraordinary linear sensitivity. Louise Hervieu was a prominent French draughtswoman, writer and illustrator, known for her mastery of charcoal and for her compositions of a strongly introspective and decorative nature. Her work bridges the gap between late Symbolism and certain sensibilities of French Art Nouveau, developing an elegant and deeply personal artistic language. In this piece, a particular attention to ornamental detail is evident, visible in the scrolls, floral motifs and plant-inspired elements that form the structure of the jewel. The treatment of volume, employing deep blacks and soft gradations, reveals the artist’s solid academic training and her ability to transform a simple decorative study into an image of great aesthetic sophistication. The drawing is signed ‘L. Hervieu’ in the lower corner and also bears the ‘Vente Fénéon’ stamp in the lower right-hand corner, a particularly significant reference to its provenance from the historic collection linked to the renowned critic, art dealer and collector Félix Fénéon, a key figure in the French avant-garde of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Lot held in an international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export licence from the country of origin may be required.
