Description
Young Peasant Woman - César Calvo de Araújo (Yurimaguas, 1910 – Lima, 1970) LATIN AMERICAN AVANT-GARDE LATIN AMERICAN FIGURATIVE ART. Oil on canvas, dimensions: 102 x 91 cm. 123 x 108 cm framed. An important and exceptional oil portrait on canvas. César Calvo de Araújo was a painter and writer who devoted himself to depicting his native land, where he lived, alternating between stays in the Peruvian capital, Lima, and other countries. He frequently held exhibitions in Lima, always focusing on themes from the Amazon rainforest region. He also visited the city of Arequipa in the 1960s, as noted by the historian Hélard Fuentes Pastor. César Calvo de Araujo’s art belongs to the genre of narrative and figurative realism. He drew his scenes directly from life in the jungle or the port city of Iquitos and other places in the Amazon region; his painting is characterised by damp grey tones. In 2015, a retrospective of Calvo de Araujo’s work was held at the British Cultural Centre in Lima, curated by Christian Bendayán. His best-known book is *Paiche*, which he himself described in the prologue as a socialist novel, written in a mixture of standard Spanish and Amazonian dialectal Spanish. PROVENANCE: Private collection of Latin American avant-garde works, Spain.
