Description
Portrait of a boy with a walking stick. Signed G. Palazzi. Italian School. 19th century. Oil on oval canvas. Dimensions: 86 x 63 cm (unframed), 103 x 83 cm (framed). The portrait depicts a boy from a wealthy family in a frontal pose, turned slightly to his left, with a serene expression and a direct gaze. He wears a dark jacket, a white shirt with a high collar and a burgundy bow tie. The Scottish tartan kilt, a characteristic garment for boys in the 19th century, held up with braces under the jacket, is a striking feature. The boy elegantly holds a gold cane, a symbol of status, whilst his other hand rests on his chest in a restrained gesture. The neutral background and directional lighting reinforce the solemnity of the portrait, focusing all attention on the subject. The brushwork is precise and polished, with a glazed finish typical of 19th-century Italian academic portraiture. The work is signed by G. Palazzi, a painter active in Italy during the second half of the century, known for his bourgeois portraits characterised by their sober and detailed execution. The composition demonstrates technical mastery in the rendering of the face, the texture of the fabrics, and the symbolic elements, confirming the portrait’s representational and social purpose. It belongs to the 19th-century tradition of studio portraiture, characterised by a realistic, idealised and ceremonial approach. 86 x 63 cm (unframed), 103 x 83 cm (framed).
