Description
Children playing cards. Pair of works. Spanish School, 19th century.
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 60 x 46 cm each (unframed), 69 x 55 cm framed. This set comprises two genre scenes depicting children in playful poses, seated on the floor playing cards and betting with coins. In the first painting, two boys are engrossed in the game, their expressions conveying seriousness and friendly rivalry. In the second, three children interact with more expressive gestures, whilst one of them watches with a coin in hand, introducing a subtle hint of mischief and complicity. The compositions are characterised by a warm light that gently bathes the figures, creating an intimate and theatrical atmosphere. The attention to anatomical modelling, expressive faces and detailed clothing reveals a high level of academic skill, with polished brushstrokes and a refined use of chiaroscuro. These works belong to the genre of costumbrismo (regionalist painting) that developed in the 19th century in Hispanic American and Iberian contexts, influenced by an interest in the popular, the picturesque, and childhood as vehicles for social narrative. The choice of subject matter, the understated setting, and the symbolism of innocence and learning through play lend this pair of canvases a didactic, endearing and decorative character. 60 x 46 cm (unframed), 69 x 55 cm (framed).
