Description
Interior of a stable with a peasant woman spinning. Flemish school. 19th century.
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 53 x 39 cm unframed, 61 x 53 cm framed. The scene depicts the sombre interior of a rural stable, where a peasant woman, dressed in a white cap, red blouse and green skirt, sits on a bale of straw spinning yarn or preparing textile fibres. Arranged around her are household utensils, a wooden bucket and a large earthenware jar, whilst in the background, a peasant and a cow are hinted at in shadow beneath a rustic, beamed structure. A faint ray of light streams in through a door opening onto the countryside, partially illuminating the woman and the objects in the foreground. The sombre atmosphere and chiaroscuro emphasise the introspective nature of the scene, where everyday rural life becomes a subject for contemplation. The use of earthy colours, the forced perspective and the rendering of light effects reflect a naturalistic sensibility characteristic of 19th-century Flemish painting, which drew on the Dutch tradition of interior genre painting. These scenes, centred on humble domestic life, have a moralising and documentary element, extolling the simplicity and dignity of peasant labour. The work stands out for its detailed setting, its narrative character and its chromatic harmony, establishing itself as a representative example of 19th-century Flemish realism applied to the genre of rural interiors.
