Description
Portrait of Caballero, Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz (Rome, 1815 – Madrid, 1894), 19th-century Spanish school
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 148 x 109 cm, 180 x 109 cm framed, with period frame. Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz (Rome, 9 February 1815 – Madrid, 10 June 1894) was a Spanish painter who specialised in Romantic-style portraits. Madrazo painted portraits, particularly of figures from aristocratic and cultural circles (Carolina Coronado, Manuel Rivadeneyra, Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda, Ramón de Campoamor, the Countess of Vilches, the Marquise de Espeja, General Evaristo San Miguel, Larra) and a number of historical paintings, historical subjects, although almost all of these date from his early years. Once he had established himself professionally, he devoted himself almost entirely to portraiture. He enjoyed great prestige and had various apprentices, such as the French artists Léon Bonnat and Jean-Léon Gérôme. In the publication *The Artist*, to which he contributed, he included poems and articles, and published some engravings there. His daughter Cecilia was the wife of Mariano Fortuny and mother of Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo, also a painter. Notable among his works are the superbly executed portraits of Isabel II, from the San Fernando Royal Academy of Fine Arts, and that of Queen Isabel’s husband, Francisco de Asís; that of King Alfonso XII; that of the former President of the Council of Ministers, Juan Bravo Murillo; that of the President of the First Republic, Nicolás Salmerón; and those of Ramón de Campoamor and José de Espronceda. As Federico Madrazo had his studio at number 24 on the corner of Jovellanos Street, where he lived and died, by municipal decree, the street was named after Federico de Madrazo from 1894. Bibliography: José Luis Díez (ed.) Federico de Madrazo y Kuntz (1815–1894) (exhibition catalogue). Madrid: Museo del Prado, 1994.
