Description
Cristóbal Rojas Poleo (1858 – Caracas, 1890) – Saint Jerome, signed in the lower left-hand corner
Oil on canvas, dimensions: 130 x 106 cm, dimensions including frame: 150 x 126 cm. Cristóbal Rojas Poleo (Cúa, 15 December 1858 – Caracas, 8 November 1890) was a Venezuelan painter who, together with Arturo Michelena, Martín Tovar y Tovar and Antonio Herrera Toro, dominated the art scene in Venezuela at the end of the 19th century. Cristóbal Rojas Poleo was born in Cúa, in the Tuy valleys of Miranda State. His parents were Cristóbal Rojas Acosta, a doctor by profession, and his mother, Alejandra Poleo. He spent his childhood in the midst of the Federal War (1859–1863) in Cúa, a town deeply affected by the events of the war, as well as a brief period in the Dominican Republic (1860–1864) where his father served as consul. He completed his early education under the guidance of his grandfather, the woodcarver José Luis Rojas, who nurtured and encouraged his passion for drawing. His father died when he was 13, so Cristóbal began working in a tobacco factory in Cúa to help support his family. Between late 1880 and 1882, he produced his first oil paintings, depicting the aftermath of the earthquake at the Ruins of Cúa and the Ruins of the Temple of La Merced. In 1881, he met the painter Antonio Herrera Toro, who had recently studied in Rome and hired him as an assistant on the decoration of Caracas Cathedral.
