Francesc Torrescassana i Sallarés (Barcelona, 1845–ibid., 1918) – The Young Fisherwomen
Signed and dated 1875; canvas dimensions: 127 x 83 cm; framed dimensions: 143 x 99 cm. Spanish painter, a pupil of Ramón Martí Alsina. Works by Torrescassana are held in, amongst others, the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya, the Víctor Balaguer Museum Library, and the Museu d’Art de Girona, and the Banco Sabadell collection, featuring a painting dedicated to the grape harvest in which the traditional realism that characterised much of his work—closely linked to the teachings he received from Martí Alsina—gives way to new explorations of light. As for portraits, which also feature prominently in his artistic output, the University of Barcelona holds a portrait of Pablo González Huebra in the rector’s gallery, as well as in the dining room of Antoni Gaudí’s Casa Vicens.
