Exquisite Virgin of Bethlehem, Mexican colonial school of the 17th century
Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 60 × 45 cm (canvas) and 83 × 66 cm (frame). A depiction of the Virgin of Bethlehem holding the Child in her arms, both crowned and dressed in fine brocade. The delicacy of the drawing and the refinement of the faces, characteristic of New Spanish Baroque devotional painting, are noteworthy. It retains its original period frame, carved and gilded.
