Virgin and Child with Crown, Cuzco Colonial School, 18th century Oil on canvas. Dimensions: 50 x 37 cm; 78 x 67 cm with frame. A Marian composition of intense popular devotion, centred on the crowned Virgin holding the Christ Child in a close, frontal pose, surrounded by a dark atmosphere enriched with delicate gilded ornamental motifs. The Virgin gently inclines her face towards the Child as he places his arm around her neck in a gesture of intimate and protective affection that lends great humanity to the scene. Both figures are crowned and haloed, emphasising their sacred status through elements of royal and celestial tradition.
