Description
Coronation of the Virgin, Colonial School, 17th century
Oil on canvas. A celestial scene featuring complex religious iconography in which Christ and God the Father crown the Virgin Mary in the presence of the dove of the Holy Spirit, forming a Trinitarian representation of profound theological symbolism. Musical angels and cherubs surround the composition amidst wispy clouds and flashes of light, creating a dynamic, soaring space imbued with great Baroque theatricality. The intense interplay of blues, pinks and golds reinforces the visual and spiritual richness of the work, whilst the figures display a delicate rendering of faces and drapery. The composition reveals influences from Hispanic Baroque models adapted to the American colonial context, where the veneration of the Virgin Mary took on special devotional significance. The carved and gilded frame accentuates the solemn and ceremonial character of the painting. Dimensions: 70 cm x 50 cm; 93 cm x 73 cm.
