Description
ATTRIBUTED TO TOMÁS HIEPES – 17TH-CENTURY SPANISH SCHOOL Oil on canvas. Tomás Hiepes, active from 1642. Stylistically, his compositions are archaic compared to the art being produced in Madrid at the time. He rendered his figures using symmetry, order, clearly defined contours and tenebrist lighting, placing great emphasis on depicting the qualities of the materials portrayed in the paintings, following the example of artists such as Juan van der Hamen. His works included flowers and still lifes, pottery, baskets, various foodstuffs, and even hunting scenes, modelled on Italian examples. It appears that Tomás Hiepes also experimented with genre painting and religious painting. A *Virgin of the Forsaken* (1644) survives from the latter category and is housed in the Royal Monastery of Las Descalzas Reales in Madrid. Dimensions: 118 x 85 cm; 137 x 100 cm.
